Scarring of the vocal cords and synechia formation (adhesion between the vocal cords)
Vocal cord scarring, Vocal cord scar
Scarring of the vocal cords occurs due to injuries to the mucous membrane of the vocal cords and the underlying sliding layers, for example, after surgeries or severe inflammations. The restriction of the mucous membrane's mobility can lead to voice changes or hoarseness.
A special form of scarring is the formation of a synechia (adhesion between the vocal cords) in the anterior part, which can cause hoarseness and, in some cases, difficulty breathing.
Treatment of scarred vocal cords:
Depending on the severity of the scarring, a tailored treatment plan needs to be created. In recent years, we have developed new therapeutic concepts. Here is an example after a single treatment:
The image shows the significant scarring and adhesion between the vocal cords (left), and the result after the treatment (right).
