Acute Laryngitis
The most common cause of temporary voice disorder is acute inflammation of the vocal folds (also known as laryngitis). The voice becomes hoarse, scratchy, or may even be completely lost (total voice loss or aphonia).
How long does acute laryngitis last?
Acute laryngitis usually resolves within a few days to a week. If symptoms persist for longer than two weeks, it is advisable to see a doctor.
What helps quickly with laryngitis?
Using a humidifier in the room helps maintain moist air and supports the healing process. Inhalation with saline solution, sage, or marshmallow can often be helpful.
Antibiotics, yes or no?
Acute laryngitis is usually caused by viruses, so antibiotic therapy is not effective.
How long should one remain silent with laryngitis?
Generally, it is recommended to remain silent for about 3 to 5 days. After that, one should avoid excessive vocal strain until the symptoms have disappeared.
