Odynophagia
Painful swallowing
Odynophagia is a swallowing disorder (dysphagia) accompanied by pain during swallowing (painful swallowing). Causes of swallowing pain can include irritated or swollen mucous membranes in the throat and pharynx.
Possible causes:
In most cases, there are harmless causes behind the pain when swallowing. However, other causes such as abscesses, infections, or throat cancer are also possible. These can include:
Inflammations in the mouth, throat, and neck (e.g., tonsillitis)
Throat cancer
Foreign bodies
Injuries
Zenker's diverticulum (an outpouching in the throat)
Sensation of a lump in the throat
Certain medications can also cause swallowing difficulties as a side effect.
Treatment:
Even when experiencing pain during swallowing, it is important to continue eating and drinking adequately. The treatment focuses on addressing the underlying condition or cause.
Any hoarseness, sensation of a lump in the throat, or swallowing disorder lasting longer than three weeks should be evaluated by a specialist in phoniatrics or an otolaryngologist (ENT doctor).
