Globus Sensation (Globus Syndrome)
It is an uncomfortable and often bothersome sensation of a foreign body in the throat, accompanied by increased swallowing and clearing of the throat. However, the feeling of a foreign body or being "phlegmy" does not go away.
What is the cause of the Globus Sensation?
The cause is often a heightened tension in the muscles surrounding the larynx. However, tumor diseases or organic changes must be ruled out. The muscles in the neck are influenced by emotions, such as sadness, anger, or fear. Crying or screaming can lead to tension. The tension in these muscles can prevent the vocal cords and the larynx from relaxing. As a result, clearing of the throat occurs. This tension can cause altered perception and a foreign body sensation (globus), leading to further tension and an increase in the sensation, creating a vicious cycle.
How is Globus Syndrome treated?
Before diagnosing Globus Syndrome, the treating physician must first rule out other causes for the symptoms, especially tumor diseases. Examination with a high-definition endoscopy system offers significant advantages in detecting even the smallest mucosal changes. Speech therapy and manual therapy, as well as osteopathy, are often sufficient for successful treatment.
